Disappearing Act

I did all of my packing for Peru this weekend. After laying out what seemed like a ton of gear I thought there would be no possible way to fit it all in my baggage allowance of 2x 23kg bags. This includes 2 sleeping bags, 2 tents (megalight for a cook tent), a pair of gigantic boots, snow stakes, ice axes, climbing gear - basically lots of heavy metal stuff.
So I started loading it into my two duffels and amazingly the bags just completely swallowed the gear! They've come to about 11 and 12 kgs. I guess its time to start throwing in some of the extra "maybe" items. And perhaps a second pair of underwear.
The blue and yellow duffels are Kathmandu bags so my only concern is that the bottoms will fall out and all my gear will be strewn up and down the Santa Cruz valley for some very lucky trekkers. I guess I can take Romaric's perspective on Kathmandu gear - if the bottom falls off then it is lighter and therefore better!

You Americans don't know how to climb light... Actually, I don't know neither: while I always had the smallest backpack in NZ (Travis was
making fun of that), I always have the biggest one in the European alps...

Only Americans can complain that 2*23kgs is not enough... An European will complain that 1*20kgs is not enough!

* What do I have today against Americans??? :D

Haha, well I bet even Europeans would bring a fair bit of stuff for a 4 week trip! You know a 4 week supply of camembert and baguettes takes up heaps of space. Besides, in the end 2x23kg was heaps of room - ezcheese is way more space efficient.

You should have packed French style: just tie everything on to the outside of your backpack so it can flap about and make a nice noise while you are walking. To be fair, at least Romaric didn't do that too much. Even though for him the first pair of underpants was only on the "maybe extra" list.

In fact, now that I think about it, that whole incident in front of Bethany on the table at Lave Dive Hut fist with my theory that French trampers hang their gear on the outside...
